Susan Moss has an MFA in painting and drawing from the University of Nebraska and taught in the Department of Art & Design at Fort Lewis College, Durango, CO. She has drawn since a child, on paper tablecloths, blackboards, white boards, notebook paper (in the margins, around the edges), paper bags and sumptuous, archival surfaces. Much of her work has focused on large-scale drawings that explore domesticity, memory, and the ordinary. After studying historic and contemporary textiles, she started using stitch, especially hand embroidery, as a way of drawing.
In her stitched drawings, often personal narratives, she is interested in integrating the spontaneity of drawing with the stitched mark, creating play between the restraint that embroidery often requires and the looser approach that drawing invites. Her current work entails little planning, relying instead on improvisation and responsiveness as the work progresses.
